Ministry extends the consultation period for uranium recovery
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has announced that it will hold two new public hearing meetings on Terrafame's uranium recovery plans. At the same time, the Ministry will extend the hearing period for the company's licence application so that opinions and comments can be submitted to the Ministry until 28 February 2018.
Times and dates of the new public hearings:
- Sotkamo at 6pm on Wednesday, 21 February 2018, in the Iso-Pölly auditorium of the Vuokatti Sport Resort, Opistontie 4.
- Kajaani at 10am on Thursday, 22 February 2018, in the auditorium of the Kajaani City Library, Seminaarinkatu 15.
At these events, experts from the Ministry, Terrafame, the Kainuu ELY Centre and the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority will give more details and the public will have the opportunity to ask questions and express opinions.
“From Terrafame’s point of view, it is important that the public has the correct and sufficient information on our uranium recovery. We have been providing information on uranium and discussing the topic with various groups since the end of 2016. The Ministry’s public consultations provide us with a welcome new opportunity to present our plans," comments Joni Lukkaroinen, CEO of Terrafame.
Terrafame filed a licence application for uranium recovery with the Government on 31 October 2017. Since then, the company has posted an overview of the issue to households in Sotkamo and Kajaani as well as to local municipalities. Further details of the project can be found on Terrafame's website at www.terrafame.fi. The company also participated in the Ministry’s first public event on uranium recovery, which was held in Sotkamo on 7 November 2017.
