Terrafame has submitted to the Kainuu ELY Centre a notification compliant with section 123 of the Environmental Protection Act regarding the commissioning of gypsum pond no. 3
Terrafame has taken into use the new gypsum pond (KS3) even though it does not have an environmental permit yet. Water is reduced from Terrafame’s process circulation with a neutralisation process that is used during rainy periods. When the neutralisation process is used, gypsum precipitate is created. Terrafame’s current gypsum ponds are becoming full, which is why the company has to take into use the new pond in order to ensure environmental safety.
The new gypsum pond KS3 was designed and built in compliance with requirements and for this very purpose. Terrafame has applied for an environmental permit for gypsum pond KS3 in August 2017. The permit decision was expected to be made by the autumn of 2020, but it has been delayed, which is why the new pond has to be taken into use before the permit decision.
On 3 November 2020, Terrafame informed the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Kainuu (Kainuu ELY Centre) of the matter in compliance with section 123 of the Environmental Protection Act.
