Terrafame starts to productise copper
A multi-metal company Terrafame Ltd. will launch industrial-scale testing at its plant located in Sotkamo to explore the productisation of copper. Research activities are geared towards reducing the consumption of hydrogen sulphide currently used in production, and improving the precipitation properties of copper product. Test operations involve using sulphur dioxide in the metals production plant’s copper precipitation process.
The company has made preparations for the productisation of copper since 2016. Copper leaches from the ore at a later stage than zinc and nickel, which is why productisation of copper is relevant now that production ramp-up has been in progress for some time.
Test operations do not increase emissions or any solid waste. Nor will the operations raise the content of metal or other substances in discharged water, or generate any noise, light or vibration effects that materially differ from the current production operations.
Terrafame is conducting the test operations under a permission granted by the Regional State Administrative Agency for Northern Finland in early June.
